The update that never arrived

The bug report: “the mobile controls only work in Vietnam. In the other missions I can't move at all — and I can't rotate and move at the same time. If I try, I stop dead.” The feeling was right — and it was right about more than one thing.

Both thumbs on the glass

Nobody plays a shooter with one thumb. You walk with the left, look with the right, and you do them at the same time. On the battleship that used to break: the instant a second thumb touched the screen, the first one went dead. Walk the deck or swing the view, never both — and if both thumbs landed together, you froze in place until you lifted every finger. Whether it “worked” came down to which thumb you happened to put down first, which is why it felt random from mission to mission.

Now the two thumbs know their jobs and keep them. Your movement thumb stays your movement thumb; a second finger looks around; and you can stride across the deck while swinging the camera in the same motion. Lift the look thumb and you keep walking. It plays the way it always should have.

Both thumbs down, 8 knots on the board: walking the deck and swinging the view in the same stride — the exact gesture that used to freeze the sailor.

Hold it and it stays held

The same trouble hid in the buttons. A held climb up a ladder, the hold-to-fight-a-fire prompt, a turret crank — any of them would let go the moment any other finger lifted, so reaching for the camera with your other thumb would drop you off the ladder or spin the rangefinder loose mid-cut. Now a hold only releases when the finger that started it lets go. Bonus: a gunner can finally work the TRAIN and ELEV cranks at once, both hands turning, the way a real crew lays a gun.

Why your phone felt stuck

One mystery was left: why did the phone act like the touch update didn't exist? Because if you'd added Warbirds to your home screen, it did — your installed copy had quietly stopped taking new versions and was frozen on an old build, politely checking for updates and throwing every one away. That's fixed. Updates flow to installed phones again, and while we were at it the whole battleship now loads and plays even with no signal at all.

Report aboard

Two thumbs walk and turn together. Held buttons and cranks stay held. The ship plays online or off. And the next update — this one and every one after it — will actually reach your phone.
